Worthing Soup Kitchen Covid – 19 Outreach Support
Providing food to those who are homeless or who have been placed in T/A or bed and breakfasts without cooking facilities
We have been providing an evening Take away meal service from one of the Day Centers in Worthing to those who are homeless or who have been placed in temporary accommodation during covid – 19 without cooking facilities. We are struggling to fund this due to the unforeseen costs involved – mainly down to having to use take away containers, cups, lids and cutlery. To date we have issued over 5000 meals at a cost of £1.11 pence each due to packaging. Our service has been accessed by many with referrals for those who are shielding -from our council. None of the food we make is wasted. It is sourced from Fareshare and protein bought.
We have had over100 service users access our services since the 5th of November 2020 and that number continues to grow. We also provide outreach service – sourcing items such as shoes, coats. tents socks and food parcels for our clients as well as advising/helping with benefit forms or signposting to relevant agency. We also provide a food parcel service to those who are on benefit and struggling to provide a hot meal for their family. We have donation boxes in various supermarkets (Tescos, Sainsburys, Waitrose and Coops) to help us to help others. We now have over 100 families from Worthing to Littlehampton who contact us weekly for help.
We need funds to continue to make the evening meals which is more often than not the only hot meal which our service users have over the course of a day. Some have no recourse to benefits so rely totally on the food we provide. We would love to be able to continue this much needed service at least until lock down is over so our clients are able to eat..We have already restricted our Sunday service due to providing a morning breakfast as we simply could not afford to do the evening meal as well.

What we need help with
We desperately need help to fundraise. We need to be able to continue what we do but with funding. We need your help to do this.We are in the process of having a web site built but this does not solve the here and now. We are hoping to have an Emmaus style project in time where we can involve clients in a retail/cafe setting. This will require funding.
