Support for Stellenbosch University Health Workers

Website / Documentation
Short description

Students from FMHS are engaging in community screenings and supporting health staff at Tygerberg Hospital.

During April 2020, 360 Matie students from the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences (FMHS) on the Tygerberg campus worked as volunteers at Tygerberg Hospital to assist in the battle against COVID-19.
From May 2020, 330 final-year medical students returned to campus to ensure that they could do locums to complete all required components of their degrees. They have been deployed in Tygerberg Hospital and surrounding urban health facilities, as well as across a network off primary and secondary health facilities in the Overberg and Cape Winelands Districts.
The FMHS has been producing plastic visors for students and staff from the Faculty who are in frontline roles. The plastic visor forms a critical part of the personal protective equipment that health workers wear to prevent the spread of COVID-19.

What we need help with

We seek to generate support for personal protective equipment, food stations and logistical support to reduce the risk of contamination for SU-related healthcare workers and medical students who volunteer at Tygerberg Hospital and the surrounding communities. These healthcare workers and volunteers assist in providing essential emergency services and are on the frontlines to combat the spread of Covid-19.
