PROVIDING THE FIRST TESTS TO THE PANZI HOSPITAL
Website / Documentation
KI are providing tests and equipment to Dr. Mukwege's fight against corona in Congo, we need help to get it there.
Because of the dire situation for the Panzi Hospital in Congo, with close to no resources available to fight corona, we are trying to give them a little bit of help. Although we have challenges at home, let us not forget about those in the most difficult circumstances.
The Panzi Hospital and 2018 Nobel Peace Prize Winner Dr Denis Mukwege are responsible of tackling Covid-19 in the Southern Kiwu province of the Democratic Republic of Kongo. The reports from the hospital tell us that the number of patients with Covid-19 is increasing, but that they still have zero testing equipment.
Karolinska Institutet (KI) hospital in Stockholm, Sweden have agreed to share 5 000 of their limited supply of tests, as well as qPCR equipment for virus detection. This equipment will be crucial in better handling of the corona crisis in the region, without them a test and trace strategy will be impossible.
In 2018, Denis Mukwege and Nadia Murad were jointly awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for “their efforts to end the use of sexual violence as a weapon of war and armed conflict”. He has also been awarded the Right Livelihood Award. As a widely respected figure in the region, as well as worldwide, he has been designated responsibility to coordinate the fight against corona in the region.
The estimated costs are about 600 kSEK for the tests, 200 kSEK for the qPCR equipment and 200 kSEK for transport and operational costs for a 1 MSEK total.
This is a first shipment of tests where more will be needed in the future. Therefore we welcome partnerships that can provide material, freight assistance or other helpful input to help enable future shipments.
The current funding is estimated at about 5-700 kSEK from Swedish non-profits Läkarmissionen, PMU and Friends of Panzi so there is still a gap of 3-500 kSEK that needs to be filled with your help.
