Short description

Mitigating covid-19 impact through employable skills training and entrepreneurship development for marginalized girls

Description

Young women and girls in some part of Northern Ghana are faced with all kinds of abuses and discrimination due to traditional customs that favor their male counterparts and also because the people are unaware about their rights and the rights of women as enshrined in the constitution of Ghana and ascribed the human rights laws of the world. These women, in a way, have the wrong ideas of their religion and cultural practices that prevent them from seeking and enforcing their rights, may be also due to their lack of education. All the negative effects against women have invariably affected their confidence level which has made many capable stay away from exhibiting their democratic rights at the local level of governance. Furthermore, they are not able to dig down their potentials and exploit them for the good of the society. Aside this societal challenge, the issue of poverty takes the centre stage that seriously affects and withdraws these women to participate in democratic activities and to support the development of the community. Majority of women such as single mothers, young girls and widows are left to fend for themselves with several children to cater for in the midst of these challenges which has been compounded due to covid-19. Unfortunately these are without skills and therefore some of them have to undertake sex trade for their survival. The youth travel across to neighboring Burkina Faso or Southern Ghana to undertake “KAYAYEE” for their livelihood. This project is therefore an intervention in providing skills training in soap making, beads making, batike, tie & dye making, weaving, dressmaking, ICT, business management and entrepreneurship development. After each training start up support is provided to beneficiaries to enable them start their individual businesses in their area of training.
