Medical Nature assisted Terapy for Corona Damages

Website / Documentation
Short description

A network of certified providers all over Sweden to rehabilitate patients and personal after the Corona pandemy.

Description

For a long time, the corona pandemic will require major rehabilitative efforts to cure various types of ”corona damages”. These could be successfully conducted in outdoor environments in contact with animals and nature. Many health professionals may be affected by burnout syndrome, PTSD or other stress related mental or physical symptoms after long time overload in the care of Covid-19-patients. They need a care environment for their healing not associated with the environment in which the stress injuries occurred. Also, formerly healthy and vital persons affected by various stress factors, loss of work, economic collapse and so on are at risk for establish anxiety disorders, depression and even deeper suicidal thoughts. The complex rehabilitation needs require reorientation and restructuring and at the same time should not burden the ordinary healthcare staff and care units. Healthcare has already been pushed to the bursting limit through adjustments, especially by increasing ICU capacity. When the pandemic fades away, a large accumulated ”care debt” takes over where patients whose planned treatments have been postponed now needs to be managed. Psychiatry and primary care have little opportunity to help the group of stress damaged patients adequately. New healthcare alternatives are needed outside of the hospital environment. The risk of continued spread of Covid-19-infection will remain for a long time. Treatment outdoors in smaller groups outside conventional health care facilities can significantly reduce this risk. Our project is built upon experiences from the Alnarp Rehabilitation Garden where garden therapy has been developed for twenty years and used for treatment of persons with burnout syndrome. Animal-oriented therapy, especially with horses, has been used as a therapeutic tool in rehabilitation for many decades. These unconventional methods have been highly successful but difficult to implement in ordinary Swedish health care. The goal of our project is to work for a broader acceptance of these methods and establish a national care chain of providers who offers medical nature-and-animal-supported therapy and rehabilitation of corona-damaged patients with the same high-quality content as in conventional care – an alternative salutogenic care system, a new infrastructure health care system based on innovative thinking and sustainability principles. The staffs of the units will consist of certified medical professionals (nurse, psychiatrist, physiotherapist, occupational therapist, psychotherapist) who work together with professionals from the ”green sector” such as physiotherapists with certification in equine assisted therapy or gardeners. In this model researchers will be invited and systems for quality registration will be built in as in ordinary psychiatric and primary care. The ongoing corona pandemic could offer a unique possibility to test new alternative ways to treat patients effectively for mental health issues and eliminate the risk for them to fall into long lasting sick leave periods.
To be accepted by the conventional healthcare system we must build this new healthcare system with a Total Quality approach with certified care providers. A quality system based on Structure, Process and Results is nearly completed but implementation needs landscape architects to check and develop the “quality of nature”, experienced medical staff to enhance “the process” and information technology to handle medical records in a secure system that fulfill all legal requirements. If we can achieve this, we will be the leader of this new market and reduce the opportunity for unserious actors.
Swedish Nature and Health foundation is ready to tackle this challenge but we have to strengthen our management resources, build an educational system, enhance communication and marketing, and provide an attractive business model to the farms and other suitable places to be part of a national network of Medical Nature assisted Therapy (MNT).
Swedish Nature and Health Foundation plan to provide all network services through a majority owned MNT-company (In Swedish: Medicinsk naturunderstödd terapi AB, the company name is already registered). We have already a substantial number of interested farms, gardens and stables and contact with competent professionals to start this process.
But to do this we need substantial resources in manpower and capital.
