Learndio- Solar Powered Offline Learning Device

Short description

Learndio is an offline solar powered learning and digital repository storage device

Description

Learndio is an offline solar powered learning and digital repository storage platform which converts online materials into offline contents for easier access to students and young adults from developing countries who have difficulty accessing such learning contents online as a result of limited or no internet access and the disruption of regular learning activities due to the Coronarivus pandemic.

The device is solar powered, thus promoting energy efficiency and meeting educational needs of the poor all at once.

Learndio is an offline solar powered learning and digital repository storage device which converts online materials into offline contents for easier access to students and young adults from developing countries who have difficulty accessing such learning contents as a result of limited or no internet access. Learndio comes in four different device formats and eliminates the need for low income students to pay for internet service to access digital learning contents. Affordable internet coverage remains a huge challenge for many African countries, and children and young adults who find themselves at the bottom of the social ladder are at even more disadvantage as a result.

Many will never own a smart gadget in their life or afford the costs of accessing learning technologies online. With Learndio, this cycle can be mitigated. Learndio makes it easier for this target group to access online and digital contents just as their counterparts in developed countries all without needing to go online. Offered in an offline mode, Learndio is a device with pre-stored digital contents sourced from multiple non copyrighted and open access sources on the internet. The contents are then formatted to fit the storage capacity of the device, where they stay until deleted by the user.

Learndio came as an innovation after realizing how far behind children in low income countries, especially those in the rural areas, are in meeting their learning needs as a result of the coronavirus situation, which has disrupted learning activities. Even in normal times, without the Coronavirus situation, these children are at a disadvantage in being up to date with modern learning as a result of no internet access, or in the case of availability, extremely expensive internet data plans from local mobile providers. Mobile data plans when available, do not come by reasonably priced for low income earners, and as such, children from this segment of the population are unable to afford the level of data needed to access the internet for the purpose of research and/ or accessing digital learning contents.

Adding to this phenomenon is the fact that limited access to electricity or unreliable electricity supply coupled with high electricity costs (developing countries often have some of the highest per unit KW cost of electricity in the world) make it difficult for these children to freely benefit from and enjoy the educational privileges and gems hidden away on the internet. In short, education access was already far behind for these children before Covid 19 came along and with the disease being present with no end in sight, it has made the situation even worse.

Target country is Liberia, with possible extension to Sierra Leone, and other West African Countries.

What we need help with

We really do need a lot of help. With everything, bascially, raning from raising capital (grant preferably, or equity, to design, product development, production and technical expertise). Janice, the team lead, has developed the concept, finalized the Learndio design and prototype and how the device will work on paper. She and team need the technical and financial backing now to push this to actualization into production and subsequent distribution with target beneficiaries. This is a Covid 19 related innovation so time is of the essence. There is no time now to go through all the traditional stages.
