LEAD Learning is a distance learning solution for countries with minimal access to Internet and Television.
LEAD Learning is LEAD’s contribution to the global education response to COVID-19. Developed in partnership with French telco Orange since April, LEAD Learning is a distance learning solution for countries where access to Internet and Television remains limited. It uses an interactive voice response (IVR) system to distribute academic audio content and track core metrics around listenership, student performance, and student retention.
LEAD Learning launched on June 11 in Liberia. It is freely accessible to Orange Liberia’s 2 million subscribers – they just have to dial ‘5323’ on their mobile phones using their Orange SIM cards. In its first 40 days, more than 80,000 Liberian children accessed LEAD’s leadership course through the platform. We are now in conversation with Liberia’s Ministry of Education about adding all of its content onto the platform, enabling LEAD Learning to become an integral part of the Ministry’s education strategy for the 2020-21 school year. At the same time, we are speaking with the Orange Group about the possibility of scaling LEAD Learning into as many as 19 countries through their established telco networks.

What we need help with
LEAD Learning offers a data-driven system that will expand radio lesson distribution, evaluation, and impact. As of July 24, LEAD is speaking with the Ministry of Education in Liberia. With additional organizational capacity, we can approach government contacts in Sierra Leone, Ghana, Zimbabwe, and several other countries. LEAD aims to scale LEAD Learning into three additional African countries and provide free audio academic lessons to at least 5 million students by the end of October 2020. With support from government partners and funders, we will address this education emergency by growing our capacity to facilitate stakeholder engagement, IVR system replication, content adaptation, and data analysis. This is an opportunity for the public, private, and NGO sectors to come together and create systemic change that affects millions of lives.
