H20PE Accelerator

Website / Documentation
Short description

We are a social enterprise working across East Africa to improve access to safe water, sanitation and hygiene products.

The leadership team constitutes the H2OPE Accelerator and works within a larger organization, Aqua Clara Kenya, which is a B-Corp certified social enterprise working across East Africa. The H2OPE Accelerator is focussed on supporting Community Health Workers (CHWs) to create demand for Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) improvement. The leadership team consists of seven people including the manager (me), who leads two community WASH promotion officers. Furthermore, the leadership team consists of four professionals who are specialized in customer service, monitoring and evaluation, and finance. This team has been together since 2018.

Our community is mostly located in rural Western Kenya, consisting of 189 Community Health Promoters (members), and 80% is women. The CHWs act as the local stockist and distributor, making a commission for each product sold. Being part of our community enables CHWs to generate an average of  $50 a month from their training and sales activities. This helps them to support their families. Our community improved WASH practices of about 285,000 people through ensuring that life changing affordable WASH technologies are available for them. Hence, in rural Kenya we are helping to reach SDG 6, clean water and sanitation for all through creating sustainable entrepreneurship in our community.

As handwashing and sanitation knowledge and products are priorities for our community, we are currently helping flattening the curve of COVID-19, in partnership with the Ministry of Health in Kenya and local county governments.

What we need help with

With the support of experts and resources from this opportunity, we will move a lot of our operations to online platforms. This will enable us to improve the support we are providing to our community of CHWs, such as: sharing educational resources, collecting data, training support tools, and receiving timely updates. Additionally, we want to set up and implement an online sales strategy leading to more WASH product sales. With more and more people in our target community acquiring smartphones, online sales are gaining traction. Moreover, there are over 20,000 CHWs across Kenya. Our goal is support these CHWs to become entrepreneurs through distributing WASH products and reach 583,500 people.
